The Environmental Public Health Office of the Henry County Health Department conducted and released nine routine inspections the first week of September.

County inspectors identified two critical violations and five non-critical violations.

Los Costenas in Middletown had one critical and one non-critical violation during a routine visit on Sep. 14. Several ready to eat food in the walk-in cooler were observed without a date marking. An employee’s personal items were observed stored above a food prep table.

Harvest Supermarket in Middletown had one critical violation and four non-critical violations during a routine visit on Sep. 14. A tray of raw ground beef was stored over a tray of raw pork in the walk-in cooler. Packages of frozen pizza and fish in a reach-in cooler had a measured temperature of 30-31 degrees. Boxes of single service items were observed stored on the floor. The Deli Slicer was observed to be soiled. The walk-in freezer condensation drainage system was frozen and not draining properly. This caused a large accumulation of frozen condensation to build up.

The Spring Street Marathon in New Castle had three non-critical violations during a routine violation on Sep. 15. The three compartment sink in use should have been used as a two compartment alternative method so one compartment of the sink can be used as a hand sink. The beverage dispenser nozzles were observed to be soiled. There was no hot water provided at the mop sink.

Multiple establishments at the Middletown Fall Fest such as Little Huskers Kettle Corn, Classic Cones, Hales Kitchen and Catering LLC, Kory’s Kettle Korn, Pork-N-Pistons, and Tropical Shaved Ice #2 and #4 had no violations.

Family Dollar on Broad Street in New Castle, Dollar General on Broad Street in New Castle, Dollar Tree on Indiana Avenue in New Castle, CVS Pharmacy in New Castle, Family Dollar on Memorial Drive in New Castle and Pizza King in Middletown had no violations.

Unless there is an immediate risk to public health and safety, Indiana regulations give business owners 10 days to review food inspection reports before releasing them to the public.

According to the Indiana State Health Department (ISHD), critical violations are “more likely than other violations to significantly contribute to food contamination, illness or environmental health hazard.” Restaurant operators are required by law to correct critical violations at the time of inspection, unless the health inspector agrees to a longer time frame to correct more complex issues.

For more information on local restaurant inspection reports, visit the health department at 1201 Race St., Suite 208, New Castle, or call 765-521-7059.
